The only staged photograph in this book–a fully restored and “hot rodded” 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle on a rutted dirt road next to a hay field on Sandy Creek Farm. I parked the car on that clay and gravel track from early morning until after sunset. The sky and lighting changed dramatically over those hours yielding great effects.

The second to final shot taken for Ghostland America. It captures the spirit and aesthetic of the book. A classic American car on rural grounds. Cherry red car, bright blue sky, white clouds and lush green grass. I showed Blackberry Smoke’s Brit Turner, a car aficionado, this photograph and said it was going to be the book cover. He reacted immediately: “I’d buy that book!”

This was the best photograph I could choose besides one featuring a scantily clad beautiful woman sitting on the hood.

Ghostland America has been nominated for the 2023 Georgia Author of the Year Awards for Specialty Book.
