“They weren’t going to run me out of Hollywood. I was Hollywood, what was left of it.”
–Nick Belane
Pulp counts as Charles Bukowski’s last book. Published before Bukowski’s death in early 1994, Pulp is a Los Angeles detective story revolving around the 55-year-old main character Nick Belane.
Bukowski laces the book with literary symbols, commentary and writers such as a character named Celine. Belane is hired by “Lady Death” to find the French writer Celine (who died in 1961), as well as locate an elusive character called “The Red Sparrow”.
It’s a funny book at times with Bukowski’s signature style, but the writer knew he was dying when he wrote Pulp, which takes place in 1993. Sleuthing, drinking, ladies, violent brutes, guns and the racetrack propel Pulp’s narrative. Bukowski also weaves space aliens into the novel when ultra-hot Jeanne Nitro appears. You can hear Bukowski’s voice as you read the story.
In Pulp, Bukowski decided to go out in style.
