Johnny Colt doesn’t waste time. Colt ranks as a top-shelf bassist, businessman, photographer and graphic artist. He’s best known as the original Black Crowes bassist. Colt played in the Atlanta group from 1989-1997. Black Crowes fans refer to those years as “the Johnny Colt Era”.
Colt also played bass in venerable bands Asphalt Blaster, Brand New Immortals, Train, and Rock Star Supernova through the years. Colt served as bassist for Lynyrd Skynyrd from 2012-1017. Colt spent years teaching yoga, running various businesses and traveled to earthquake-ravaged Japan to report for CNN in 2011. He’s a bad ass…
In 2021, Colt published Postcards from the (Ed)ge: The Black & White Crowes Volume 3 as a tribute to his old Crowes bandmate, keyboardist Eddie Harsch. Harsch died in 2016, and Colt decided to pay respect to Harsch through his photography during their time with the Black Crowes in the 1990s. It’s a collector’s item. Only a few hundred copies exist.
Postcards from the (Ed)ge contain over 20 never seen photos of the great keyboardist Eddie Harsch when he and Colt served as members of the Crowes. Colt allowed Crowes fans to submit their memories of Harsch, which he included in this soulful collection. In my package, “19 of 100”, contains the book and three separate pieces of indelible work by Colt.
When the Black Crowes toured, Colt used the tour bus bathroom as his darkroom to develop these vintage images. It’s an essential piece of art to any Black Crowes fan. Colt now resides in New Orleans and from my understanding is currently working on a new photo book from his years in the Crowes.
