September 10, 2022. Out on Highway 82, driving towards Nahunta, the Okefenokee Swamp and Waycross, Georgia, sits Scott’s BBQ. On this full moon Saturday Elizabeth Josephine and I decided to pay them a visit.
Located in Waynesville, Georgia (population 331), Scott’s has been owned by Mike and Julie Scott since 2016. Known for Mumford Plantation in the days of mineral springs bath houses, Scott’s now serves as the cultural landmark in Waynesville.
This small structure sits on a couple acres of property. Langford smokers and piles of wood sit around back as well as picnic tables covered by a sheet metal roof. The scent of wood smoke drifts in the air. The nice lady who took our order was interrupted by a customer calling to place a pick up order. Eight or ten customers pulled up while we waited–a busy place.
“They have an A health rating,” observed Elizabeth as we waited at the picnic table. An approaching thunderstorm darkened the skies and distant thunder rolled miles away as we watched the light traffic out on the highway. I studied the formidable menu. They offer barbecue, burgers, Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, sausage dogs, rib platters and a strong selection of sides like onion rings, fries, mac & cheese and Brunswick Stew. The food proved worth the wait.
Elizabeth ordered the brisket sandwich, baked beans and fried okra with unsweetened iced tea. I selected the signature barbecue sandwich, battered French fries and potato salad with sweetened iced tea. Every item counted as fresh and delicious as well as Scott’s one signature sweet sauce that emitted a mild kick. Not one item disappointed. We should’ve ordered the banana pudding.
Scott’s serves mighty fine vittles. The place represents a small family-owned business that enjoys a strong local following, and will cause folks to drive in from neighboring towns to enjoy this memorable food. Five stars.
